Happy Father's Day
This Sunday is Father's Day. BIS students celebrated Father's Day with various activities for their dads. Nursery students drew certificates for dads. Reception students made some ties that symbolize dads. Year 1 students wrote their best wishes for their father in Chinese class. Year 3 students made colorful cards for dads and expressed their love for dads in different languages. Year 4 and 5 drew beautiful pictures for their dads. Year 6 made candles for their dads as gifts. We wish all dads a happy and unforgettable Father's Day.
50RMB Challenge
The students in Years 4 and 5 have been learning about cocoa farming and how cocoa farmers can earn a very low wage for the work they do, meaning that they often live in poverty. They learnt that cocoa farmers can live in 12.64RMB per day and they have to feed their families. The students learnt that items could cost less in different parts of the world, so, to take this into account for this the amount was increased to 50RMB.
The students needed to plan what they would purchase and think carefully about their budget. They thought about nutrition and which foods would be good for a farmer who is working hard all day. The students split into 6 different teams and went to Aeon. When they came back the students shared what they had bought with their class.
This was a meaningful activity for the students who were able to learn about compassion and focus on skills that they would use in every day life. They had to ask shop assistants where to find things and work well with others as part of a team.
After the students had finished their activity, Ms. Sinead and Ms. Danielle took the items to 6 people in Jinshazhou who are less fortunate and who work really hard (such as street cleaners) to thank them for their hard work. The students learnt that helping others and showing compassion and empathy are important qualities to have.
The activity wouldn't have been possible with out the support of other teachers and staff who joined Years 4 and 5 for the activity. Thank you to Ms. Sinead, Ms. Molly, Ms. Jasmine, Ms. Tiffany, Mr. Aaron and Mr. Ray for your support.
This is the third charitable project that Year 4 and 5 have worked on this year (car wash and non-uniform day). Well done Years 4 and 5 for working on such a meaningful project and for helping others in the community.
Candle Making Event
Ahead of Fathers Day, Year 6 created scented candles as a gift. These candles tie in with our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) lessons, where the class has ventured into learning about economic wellbeing and the basics of the production process of businesses. For this subject, we have done a short, fun role play about the processes of a coffee shop and made scented candles to see the production process in action – from input, conversion to output. Learners also decorated their candle jars with glitter, beads, and twine. Excellent work, Year 6!
Catalyst Experiment
Year 9 conducted an experiment about the factors that affect the rate of a reaction, they performed the experiment successfully using hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst to see how a catalyst affect the rate of a reaction and came to a concussion that when a catalyst is added to any reaction the speed at which the reaction takes place increases.
