Celebrating Excellence: The Cambridge Learner Attributes Awards Ceremony
Written by Jenny, May 2024.
On May 17, Britannia International School (BIS) in Guangzhou held a grand ceremony to present the Cambridge Learner Attributes Awards. At the ceremony, Principal Mark personally recognized a group of students who exemplify outstanding qualities. The Cambridge Learner Attributes include self-discipline, curiosity, innovation, teamwork, and leadership.
This award has a profound impact on students' progress and performance. Firstly, it motivates students to strive for excellence in both academic and personal development, setting clear goals and working diligently to achieve them. Secondly, by recognizing self-discipline and curiosity, students are encouraged to explore knowledge proactively and develop a persistent learning attitude. The acknowledgment of innovation and teamwork inspires students to be creative when facing challenges and to learn to listen and collaborate within a team, enhancing their problem-solving skills. The recognition of leadership boosts students' confidence in taking responsibility and guiding others, helping them grow into well-rounded individuals.
The Cambridge Learner Attributes Award not only acknowledges students' past efforts but also inspires their future potential, encouraging them to continue their academic and personal growth journey.
Engaging Young Minds: Parents Share Their Professions with Year 1A
Written by Ms. Samantha, April 2024.
Year 1A recently started their unit on “The Working World and Jobs” in Global Perspectives and we are thrilled to have parents come in and share their professions with the class.
It is a great way to get the children interested in exploring different occupations and to learn about the skills required for various careers. Some parents prepared brief talks that highlighted their jobs, while others brought in props or tools from their jobs to help illustrate their points.
The presentations were interactive and engaging, with plenty of visuals and hands-on activities to keep the kids interested. The children were fascinated by the different professions they learned about, and they had many questions for the parents who came in to share their experiences.
It was a wonderful opportunity for them to see the practical application of what they were learning in the classroom and to understand the real-world implications of their studies.
Overall, inviting parents to share their professions with the class is a great success. It is a fun and enriching learning experience for both children and parents, and it helps to inspire curiosity and encourage the kids to explore new career paths. I am grateful to the parents who took the time to come in and share their experiences, and I look forward to more opportunities like this in the future.
Exploring length, mass and capacity
Written by Ms. Zanie, April 2024.
In recent weeks, our Year 1B Math class has delved into the concepts of length, mass, and capacity. Through a variety of activities, both inside and outside the classroom, students have had the opportunity to utilize various measuring instruments. Working in small groups, pairs, and individually, they have demonstrated their understanding of these concepts. Practical application has been key in solidifying their comprehension, with engaging activities such as a scavenger hunt held on the school's play field. This playful approach to learning has kept students actively involved, as they enthusiastically wielded measuring tapes and stationary while on the hunt. Congratulations to Year 1B on their accomplishments thus far!
Empowering Young Minds: Peer-Led Physics Review Activity for Enhanced Learning and Engagement
Written by Mr. Dickson, May 2024.
In physics, Years 9 to 11 students have been participating in an activity that helps them review all the topics learnt throughout the year. Students were divided into two teams, and they had to design questions for the opposing teams to answer with the help of some lesson materials. They also marked each other's responses and provided feedback. This activity gave them the experience of being a physics teacher, helping their classmates to clear any misunderstanding and strengthen their concepts, and practising answering exam-styled questions.
Physics is a challenging subject, and it is crucial to keep students motivated. An activity is always a great way to engage students during a lesson.
Wonderful Performance in Cambridge iGCSE English as a Second Language Examinations
Written by Mr. Ian Simandl, May 2024.
The school is delighted to share the remarkable level of participation Year 11 students demonstrated in the recently conducted Cambridge iGCSE English as a Second Language examinations. Each participant displayed their refined skills and performed to a pleasing standard, reflecting their hard work and dedication.
The examination consisted of an interview, a short talk, and a related discussion. In preparation for the test, the two-minute short talk posed a challenge, causing some initial worry among the learners. However, with the support of our myself and a series of productive lessons, their fears soon dissipated. They embraced the opportunity to showcase their linguistic abilities and confidently delivered their short talks.
As the teacher overseeing this process, I have full confidence in the positive outcomes of these examinations. The speaking tests will soon be sent to the UK for moderation, but based on the students' performance and the progress they have made, I am optimistic about their success.
Looking ahead, our students now face the next challenge—the official reading and writing examination, followed by the official listening examination. With the enthusiasm and determination they have demonstrated thus far, I have no doubt that they will rise to the occasion and excel in these assessments as well.
I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the Year 11 students for their outstanding performance in the Cambridge iGCSE English as a Second Language examinations. Your dedication, resilience, and progress are truly commendable. Keep up the excellent work, and continue to embrace the upcoming challenges with confidence and enthusiasm.
All the best for the upcoming examinations!
