Also, don't forget about our annual Sports Day coming up next week! This event promises an array of activities where students can learn new skills, embrace healthy competition, and foster teamwork. Both our students and staff are eagerly looking forward to Sports Day!
Let's get ready for a week filled with learning, fun, and excitement!
Promoting Healthy Practices: Engaging Pre-Nursery Students in Nutritious Celebrations
Written by Liliia, March 2024.
We have been promoting healthy practices in the pre-nursery for the past few weeks. This topic is so fascinating and engaging for our younger students. Making nutritious salads for our mothers and grandmothers in celebration of Women's Day was one of the main activities. Children selected vegetables, decorated salad boxes with care, and sliced and diced everything accurately. The kids then presented our mothers and grandmothers those salads. Children learned that healthy food may be visually eye-catching, delicious, and vibrant.
Exploring Wildlife: Journeying Through Diverse Habitats
Written by Suzanne, Yvonne and Fenny, March 2024.
This terms current Unit of Learning is all about ‘Animal Rescuers’, through which children have been exploring the theme of Wildlife and habitats from around the world.
Our IEYC (International Early Years Curriculum) playful learning experiences in this unit help our children to be:
Adaptable, Collaborators, Internationally Minded, Communicators, Empathetic, Globally Competent, Ethical, Resilient, Respectful, Thinkers.
To improve Personal and International Learning, we introduced the children to some Wildlife and habitats from around the world.
In Learning Block One, we Visited the North and South Pole. Places at the very top and very bottom of our wonderful world. There were animals that needed our help and it was only right that we go and help them. We found out about helping animals from the Poles and built shelters to protect the animals from the freezing cold.
In Learning Block 2, we explored what a jungle is like, and learnt about all the wonderful animals that make the jungle their home. Creating an Animal Rescue Centre to look after all our rescued soft toy animals.
In Learning Block 3, we are currently finding out about what a Savanna is like. Taking a good look at some of the animals that live there. Exploring the amazing colours and patterns that different animals have and reading and role playing a lovely story about a girl who is taking fruit to her best friend.
We look forward to finishing our unit with learning block 4 where we’re going to one of the hottest places on our planet – the Desert. Where there is lots and lots of sand, that stretches as far as you can see.
Year 6 Mathematics in the great outdoors
Written by Jason, March 2024.
Numeracy is never dull in the outdoor classroom of Year 6 and while it’s true that nature holds valuable Math-related lessons for students, the subject also becomes stimulating simply by conducting hands-on activities outdoors. The change of scene from studying indoors works wonders for reinforcing Math concepts and creating a love for the subject. Year 6 students have embarked on a journey that has endless possibilities. The freedom to express themselves and calculate fractions, Algebraic expressions, and word problems outdoors, has created a curiosity among the class.
Exploring mathematics outdoors is beneficial as it will:
l Enable my students to explore their curiosity, develop team-building skills, and gives them a great sense of independence. My students make useful links in their learning, and this encourages exploration and risk-taking.
l Be memorable in that it offers mathematical pursuits in a context not normally associated with mathematical learning.
l Support emotional well-being and contribute to children’s self-image of themselves as mathematicians.
World Book Day:
On March 7th, the Year 6 class celebrated the magic of literature by reading in various languages with a cup of hot chocolate. We did a reading presentation in English, Afrikaans, Japanese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, and Vietnamese. This was a great opportunity to show appreciation to literature written in foreign languages.
Collaborative Presentation: Exploring Stress
Written by Mr. Aaron, March 2024.
The secondary EAL students collaborated closely as a team to deliver a structured presentation to the Year 5 students. Using a combination of simple and complex sentence structures, they effectively communicated the concept of stress, covering its definition, common symptoms, ways to manage it, and explained why stress is not always negative. Their cohesive teamwork allowed them to give a well-organized presentation that seamlessly transitioned between topics, ensuring that the Year 5 students could grasp the information with ease.
Enhanced Writing Skills Development in Mandarin IGCSE Course: A Case Study of Year 11 Students
Written by Jane Yu, March 2024.
In the Cambridge IGCSE course of Mandarin as a Foreign Language, Year11 students prepare more consciously after the last school mock exam: in addition to increasing their vocabulary, they need to improve their speaking communication and writing skills.
In order to train students to write more quality compositions according to the prescribed examination time, we specially explained the on-site composition questions together in class and wrote within a limited time, and then corrected them one to one. For example, when learning the topic of "Tourism Experience", students first learned about Chinese cities and related tourist attractions through the map of China and related city tourism videos and pictures, then learned the expression of tourism experience; combined with traffic, weather, dress, food and other topics, recommend the tourist attractions and share their tourism experience in China, analyze the structure of the article, and write in class according to the correct format.
Krishna and Khanh have improved their writing skills this semester, and Mohammed and Mariam have been able to take their problems in writing seriously and correct them. Expect and believe that through their efforts, they can get better results in the formal examination.
